Machine; n. i. ahbujjéchegun, (pl. -un).

Mad. He is. m.; kéewuhnáhdeze, v. n. 3, (p. c. kahw-).

Madam; wagemahquáweyun.

Mad-cap; n. a. waduhkee.

Made. There is m.; -kahda, e. g., there is a ditch made; puhsáhnekahda, v. i. 2. There is a floor made; uhpéshemoonekahda. See make.

Madness; n. i. kéewuhnahdezewin.

Maggot; n. a. oquá, (pl. -g).

Magic (witchcraft); n. i. mahmaunjenowin, mahmáunjechegáwin, suhsuhgódezewin. He practises magic; mahmaunjenoo, mahmáunjechega, suhsuhgódeze, v. n. 2, 3, (p. c. mam-, sas-). See witchcraft.

Magician; n. a. mamaunjenood; mahmaúnjechegáwenéne, suhsuhgódezewenene, (pl. -wug). See sorceror, enchantment.

Magistrate. Same as judge.

Magnanimous. He is m.; mahmowandum; mungedaä, v. n. 5, 2.

Majesty; n. i. kechetwáhwezewin. Your majesty; kachetwáhwezeyun, kache-ogemáhweyun.

Make (form, create). He makes him, it; od-ózheäun. od-ozhetoon, v. t. I. VIII., (p. c. wazh-). In compos. -ka as affix, e.g. he makes boxes, muhkukooka; kettles, uhkikooka; string, uhsuhbáubeka; nets, uhsúbeka; canoes, cheemáuneka. &c, all v. n. 2. He m. it skilfully; onetáhwetoon, v. t. VIII. He m. it at random; o-puhgwúnuhwetoon, v. t. VIII. He m. it for him; od-ozhetúmuhwaun, mod. C. He m. it for himself; od-ozhetumáhsoon, v. t. VI. He m. him, it thus; od-ézheäun, od-ézhetoon, v. t. I., VIII., (p. c. azhe-)

Make (cause). Use causative form of the verb, (mod. D., d.), e. g., he m. him run, o-pemebuttoóäun; - sick, od-áhkooseäun. With adjectives prefix pron. o- or od-, and add -toon, e. g., he m. it high, od-ishpáhtoon; long, o-kinwáhtoon; narrow, od-uhgausuhdátoon; big, o-mecháhtoon, v. t. VIII., see force, cause. He m. him, it be this or that; od-áhweäun, od-áhwetoon, v. t. VIII.

Make known. See proclaim.

Maker; p. n. a. wazheëgad, (pl. -jig). In compos. -kad, (pl. -jig), e.g., box m., mákukookad; kettle m., ákikookad; boot m., makesínekad, and so on other trades, using the part. of the verb; or (2) add -kawenene to the article without further altering - thus, boot m., muhkesenekáwenene, (pl. -wug); brick m., misquuhsinekáwenene. This form can be altered to the feminine gender - thus, muhkesenekáwequa, misquuhsinekáwequa, (pl. -g).

Making; in compos., -kawin: e.g., boot-m.; muhkesinekáwin; kettle-m.; uhkikookáwin; and so on other trades, simply adding -wín to the verb. See make, also manufacture.

Malady; n. i. enahpenáwin.

Male; n. a. enene, (pl. -wug); nahbáuhyah, (pl. -g). In compos., nahba- or uhyáhba- prefixed: e.g., ram, nahbá-mahnistáhnish. Male of birds; nahbása, (pl. -g). Male of fish; nahbámag, (pl. -wúg). See bear, beaver, skin, &c.

Malice; n. i. guhgaúnjenuhwáëdewin.

Malicious. He shews a malicious joy over another's distress; o-guhgaúnjegedámaun, v. t. I. (p. c. ga-). He speaks maliciously; guhgaúnjégetáhga, v. n. 2, (p. c. gag-).

Malignant. See laugh, spiteful.

Mallet; n. i. métego-puhketáëgun, (pl. -un).

Mamma; n. a. máhmah.

Man; n. a. enene, (pl. -wug).

Manage. See superintend.

Mane; n. i. papazhegóonguhzhe wenesésun.

Mange. He has m.; oméege, v. n. 3a.

Manger; n. i. wesenewáhgun.

Manhood; n. i. enénewewin.

Maniac; p. n. a. kahwuhnáhdezid, (pl. -jig).

Manifest. It is m.; mesheshúhwesechegáhda, v. i. 2. See reveal.

Manifestation; n. i. mesheshúhwahbumenáhgoozewin.

Mankind. All mankind; kúhkenuh bamáhdezejig, kúhkenuh enénéwug, kúhkenuh omah uhkeeng ayáhjig.

Manner. In what m.? ahneen ezhe-? After this manner; me suh ezhe-. In like m.; me tebishko. All manner; -ahnooj.

Manner (manners, character); n. i. ezhewábezewin, enáhdezewin. See behave.

Mansion. Heavenly mansions; ishpeming duhzhe uhbenahsowinun.

Mantle; n. i. okoonaas.

Manure; n. i. pezheke-mo.

Many; (an. in.) nébewuh nébenuh. They are m.; (an. in.) páhtuhénoowug, meshénoowug, v. n. 4, pl.; páhtuhenudoon, meshénudoon, v. i. 7, pl. They are so m.; ezhénoowug, v. n. 4, pl. How many? (an. in.) ahneen anduchewaud? ahneen andussing? ahneen andusso -? See so many, plenty.

Many together. They are m. t. (in a crowd, flock, herd, band; oquéenowug, mahmuhwénoowug, v. n. 4, pl., (p.c. waqu-, muhy-). See throng.

Many (as many as); menik. Many a time; see frequently. Many years; nebewuh dusso peboon.

Maple; n. i. enenáhtig, (pl. -oon). M. forest; máhnuhkeke. M. wood; enenáhtigoosug.

Maple sugar; n. i. sesebáhkwud. The sugar bush (or camp); sesebáhkwudokaun; iskegummésegun, (pl. un). He makes s.; sesebáhkwudooka, v. n. 2, ishkegummesega. S. making; sesebáhkwudookáwin. He collects the sap; áhwuhsebe, v. n. 3a. Sap; óonsebun, sesebáhkwudáhbo. The sap is running; oonjegah. The sap runs fast; kezhegah, v. i. 1. - by night; nebáhgáh. - stops running; ishqúagáh. - begins running; máhjegah. - is spoiled; wahquáhgumme nebe. March. He m.; pémoosa, v. n. 2. (Same as walk). He marches foremost (to war); muhyáhoosa, v. n. 2.

Mare; n. a. noozha papazhegoonguhzhee, (pl. -ug).

Mark (sign); n. i. kékenuhwáhjechegun, (pl. -un). Mark for travellers; kekúhegun, (pl. -un). Mark on paper; muhzenebeëgun.

Mark. He marks (makes marks); kekenuhwahjechega, v. n. 2, (p. c. kak-). For travellers; kekúhega, v. n. 2, (p. c. kak-). - on paper; muhzenebéëga, pashebéëga, v. n. 2, (p. c. maz-, puhya-). He marks him, it; o-kekenuhwáhjéäun, v. t. I., o-páshebeäun, v.t. I., o-kekenuhwáhjetoon, o-páshebetoon, v. t. VIII. He makes marks on the road for him; o-keketuhwaun, v. t. II., (p. c. kak-). Marry (married). He is m.; wedega, v. n. 2, (p. c. wahd-). He m. her; o-wéewemaun, v. t. I. He is m. to her; o-wedegámaun, v. t. I. We are m.; kewedegándemin, mod. B. He takes to himself a wife (Indian fashion); weewekoodáhdezo, mod. a. He gives in marriage; weéwekáhga, v. n. 2. He gives him a wife; o-wéewekuhwaun, v. t. II.

Massive. It is m.; keche-mechah, v. i. 1.

Mast; n. i. ningáusuhmoonáhtig, (pl. -oon).

Master; p. n. a. tabánjegad, nahgáhnezid, (pl. -jig). M. of; see own. One's own m.; see free. School-master; see school.

Mat; n. i. uhnáhkun, (pl. -un). M. for floor or covering of wigwam, uhpuhquáy, (pl. -ug). He makes mats; uhnáhkuneka, uhpuhquáëka, v. n. 2. Small cord used in m. making; uhnáhkunáyaub, (pl. -in). See rush.

Match; n. i. ishkootáns, (pl. -un).

Match-plane; n. i. báusekóójegun, (pl. -un). He matches it (boards); o-báusekoonaun, o-baúsekoodaun, v. t. III., VII.

Maturity; n. i. keezhegewin. He is of mature age; kéezhege, v. n. 3. It is matured; kéezhegin, v. i. 5. See ripe, adult.

Mayor; n. a. odánah duhzhe ógemah.

Me; neen. Me first, or, my turn; nénetum. Me (in obj. case), expressed by a change in the verb, as He sees me; newáhbumik. See grammar.

Meadow; n. i. mushkóosekaun. See prairie.

Meal (flour); pesepóojegun.

Meal (dinner, &c.); wésenewin.

Mean. What does it m.? ahneen ezhenesetotuhming? It means so and so; mesuh azhenesédotuhming. See intend.

Mean (despicable). It is m.; tahbussandáhgwud, v. i. 10, (p. c. tab-); muhnáhdud, v. i. 7, (p. c. man-).

Measles; n. i. misquauzháwin. He has m.; misquauzhá, v. n. 2, (p. c. mas-).

Measure. Yard, bushel, acre, hour, mile, &c, all expressed by tebúhegun; pint, minute, furlong, rood, &c, by the diminutive tebuhegáuns, (pl. -un). But for gallon, pint, &c, menequáujegun (drinking vessel) and omooduy (bottle) are also used. See fathom, foot, inch, &c. Measure of a canoe; tebúhoonoon, (pl. -un).

Measure. He m.; tebúhega. He m. it; (an. in.) o-tebuhegánun, -gan, v. t. VI.; o-tebuhaun, v. t. VII. He m. land; tebúhühke. See survey.

Meat (flesh); n. i. wéeyaus. Dried meat; gauskedá-weeyaus. A piece of meat; meseáh. He cuts up m.; meseáhka, v. n. 2, (p. c. mas-).

Medal; n. i. kekenuhwáhjechegun, (pl. -un).

Meddle. He m.; wáhweeyugeze, v. n. 3.

Mediator; p. n. a. ganóoduhmáhgad.

Medical root (for wounds); n. i. mezhwáwushk. (- for headache); n. i. sáhsuhbequun.

Medicine; n. i. mushkéke. Liquid m.; mushkékewáhbo.

Medicine-bag; n. i. pinjegoosun, (pl. -un).

Medicine-craft. See Indian superstitions.

Meditate. He m.; nuhnáhguhduhwándum, v. n. 5, (p. c. nan-).

Meditation; n. i. nuhnáhguhduhwándumoowin.

Medium. Same as medicine-man.

Meek. He is m.; pakáhdeze, noókáhdeze, v. n. 3, (p. c. puhya-, nwah-). See gentle, patient.

Meekness; n. i. pakáhdezewin.

Meet. He m. some one; nuhgishkáhga, v. n. 2, (p. c. nag-). He m. him, it; o-nuhgíshkuhwaun, o-nuhgishkaun, v. t. II., VII. (or nuhquáshkuhwaun). We m. each other; kenuhgishkoodáhdemin, mod. B. He m. him by water; o-nuhgáhwaun, v.t. V. See rendezvous.

Meet (assemble). We. m. together; ke-máhwunjédemin, mod. B., (p.c. muhyah-). See summon.

Meeting (assembly); n. i. mahwunjeédewin, (pl. -an).

Meeting house; n. i. máhwunde-wegúmmig, mahwunjede-weguhmig.

Melancholy. He is m.; gooshkwahwuhdeze, v. n. 3, (p. c. gwash-).

Melody. See tune.

Melon. Same as cucumber.

Melt (by heat). He m. it; (an. in.) o-ningékooswaun, o-ningékosaun, v. t. V. VII. It melts; (an. in.) ningéso, ningeda, v.n.4, v. i. 2. He m. it (metal); an. in. o-ningáhbekiswaun, o-ningáhbekesaun, v. t. V., VII., (p. c. nang-). It m. (metal); an. in. ningahbekeso, ningahbekeda, v. n. 4, v. i. 2.

Melt pitch. He m. p.; o-shoógumeäun pegewh. v. t.I., (p. c. shwaug-). The p. is m.; shóogummese pegewh.

Message; n. i. mejedwáwin, (pl. -un), enenáuzhuhoogoowin. He sends him with a m.; o-mejechéemaun, od-enenauzhuhwaun, v. t. I., V., (p. c. maj-, an-). He sends a m.; ninduhewa, v. n. 2. (p. c. nan-).

Messenger; n. a. meshénuhwa, (pl. -g). enenáuzhuhwáhgun, (pl. -ug).

Metal; pewáubik (in compos., -wáhbik). On metal; metáhbik. In the midst of m.; náhwáhbik. So many objects of stone, metal, glass, &c.; dusswáhbik. How many objects of stone, metal, &c.? ahneen dusswáhbik: e.g., How much money? ahneen dusswáhbik shooneyah? Two, twenty dollars; neezhwahbik, neezhtuhnuh dusswahbik. See so many, It is of metal; pewáhbikud, v. i. 7. In compos., (an. in.) -áhbikeze, -áhbekud: e.g., The watch (an.) is smooth; oonáhbikeze tebuhegéeziswaun. Midsummer; náhwenéebing, ahbetuh-neebin.

Midwife; n. a. gáhtenewáqua, (pl. -g). She acts as m.; gáhtenewa, v. n. 2.

Mighty. See powerful.

Mild. See meek, gentle.

Mild weather. It is m. w.; áhbuhwah, v. i. 1

Mile; n. i. tebúhegun, tebáhbaun.

Milestone; n. i. kekúhegun, (pl. -un).

Milk; n. i. toodoosháhbo. He milks her; o-sénenaun, v. t. I.

Mill, n. Indian mill (made like a pestle and mortar); pootáhgun, (pl. -ug). Pestle; pootáhgunáuk, (pl. -oon). See saw-mill, flour-mill.

Miller; n. a. pesepóojega-wenéne, (pl. -wug).

Milliner; n. a. wewuhquáunekáequa, (pl. -g).

Million; keche medáuswauk.

Mimic. See ape.

Mince. He m. it; o-péweguhaun, v. t. VII.

Mind. He m.; pahbahmándum, v. n. 5, (p. c. pab-). His m. is occupied (distracted); pabishquándum, oonduhmandum, onushquayandum; v. n. 5. See attention, care, resolve, change.

Mine, n. i.; -kaun as affix: e.g., Iron, copper, lead mine; pewáubikookaun, misquáubikókaun, ushkeekoomaúnekaun.

Mineral. All metals, stone and glass distinguished (in connection with numerals or verbs) by the use of wahbik (an. wahbekeze) as an affix. See metal.

Mink; n. a. shaungwásha, (pl. -wug).

Minor. He is a m.; kah muhshe kéezhegese, v. n. 3, neg. (p. c. kauzh-).

Minstrel. See musician.

Mint (where coin is made); n. i. shooneyahkáwegummig.

Minute. See measure.

Miracle; n. i. mahmaundáhwechegáwin. He works m.; mahmaundahwechega, v. n. 2, (p. c. mam-).

Miraculous; mahmuhkáhdukummig.

Mirage. There is a m. (optical illusion caused by refraction of the atmosphere); oombáhneta, v. i. 2, (p, c. wamb-).

Misinform. He m. him; o-guhgenuhwishkemaun ; o-kéenuhwishke-wéendumuhwaun, v. t. II., (so also misinterpret, misguide, &c, prefixing keenuhwishke).
