Ojibwe Drills

 

I.
this is a book - mazina'igan o'ow
this is a lake - zaaga'igan o'ow
this is a house - waakaa'igan o'ow
this is a road - miikana o'ow
this is a door - ishkwaandem o'ow
this is a window - waasechigan o'ow
this is a table - adoopowin o'ow
this is a chair - apabiwin o'ow
this is a leaf - aniibiish o'ow
this is a ball - bikwaakwad o'ow

this is a tree - mitig wa'aw
this is a stone - asin wa'aw
this is a dog - animosh wa'aw
this is a cat - gaazhagens wa'aw
this is a wolf - ma'iingan wa'aw
this is a fish - giigoonh wa'aw
this is an apple - mishiimin wa'aw
this is a pine tree - zhingwaak wa'aw
this is an oak tree - mitigomizh wa'aw
this is the sun - giizis wa'aw

there are two types of words - alive or animate, and not alive, or inanimate.
inanimate word use o'ow as 'this', but animate words use wa'aw as 'this'.

note. the verb 'to be' used in English in such grammatical constructions is not used in Ojibwe. Ojibwe phrases look 'book this', 'lake this', 'tree this' instead of 'this is a book, lake, tree'.
there are no articles in Ojibwe language.

that is a road - miikana i'iw
that is a door - ishkwaandem i'iw
that is a window - waasechigan i'iw
that is a table - adoopowin i'iw
that is a chair - apabiwin i'iw
that is a leaf - aniibiish i'iw
that is a lake - zaaga'igan i'iw
that is a ball - bikwaakwad i'iw

that is a tree - mitig a'aw
that is a stone - asin a'aw
that is a dog - animosh a'aw
that is a cat - gaazhagens a'aw
that is a wolf - ma'iingan a'aw
that is a fish - giigoonh a'aw
that is an apple - mishiimin a'aw
that is a pine tree - zhingwaak a'aw
that is an oak tree - mitigomizh a'aw
that is the sun - giizis a'aw

'that' for inanimate words is i'iw in Ojibwe. for animate words 'that' is a'aw.

to ask 'is this...?' or 'is that...?' the word na (ina) is used after the first word in the phrase.
